DÉCOR AND DETAILS

The 50s was such a playful era — there is lots of inspiration on which to draw to give your wedding reception a wonderful retro feel. Go for full-on cinematic glamour, making reference to the movies stars of the day. Create a pastel colour explosion with pretty cupcakes, stationery, table décor and balloons, or go for a full-on rock ‘n’ roll-style party.

There are some very talented cake designers out there who love to experiment with new briefs and create sensational sugar creations. Have fun with your cake design, or go for an original vintage 50s cake topper — you can buy them online (try the US site www.fancyflours.com). A mass of pretty little cupcakes decorated to suit your colour scheme is also fun.

The 1950s is a great era for colour inspiration. Pastel shades were hugely popular. An easy and super fun way to incorporate a rainbow of colour at your wedding is to hang paper pompoms. Ready-made pompoms are readily available online — order a variety of colours and hang them at different heights.

Vintage paraphernalia that can be used to create a styled scene can be found in most charity shops and car-boot sales. Look to 50s American prom culture for inspiration. One of the most fun weddings I ever attended was styled around the ‘Enchantment Under The Sea Dance’ from the movie Back to the Future! Ask your stationer to design some 50s-style prom party invites. Set the stage with a backdrop of foiled tinsel strips, play rock ‘n’ roll, and ask your guests to dress the part. Set up a photo-booth and provide props for your guests to have fun with – put cat’s-eye sunglasses out for the ladies to wear and little pots of Brylcreem out for the gents. Serve 50s diner-style French fries, and consider asking an event stylist to design a dessert table, that incorporates miniature milkshakes, complete with stripy straws, cookies, cakes and ice-cream.

HERE ARE SOME CULTURAL REFERENCES TO INSPIRE YOU:
